The IUCN World Parks Congress (WPC) is the most influential gathering of world leaders to discuss protected areas management. It takes place every 10 years and the last one was held between November 12 – 19, 2014 in Sydney, Australia.  In between sessions, The Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist Group (TAPAS) hosted a networking event open to TAPAS members and WPC participants.

The TAPAS Group provides education to local leaders and policy makers to improve effectiveness and impact positively on biodiversity in protected areas where tourism is a key component. With over 200 members comprised of government authorities, NGO, private sector and academia representatives, TAPAS held this meeting aiming to update its member’s on information of their ongoing initiatives and strategy for the next decade.

During the event, GSTC Board Member, Dr Kelly Bricker discussed the application of the GSTC Criteria -the universal sustainability performance standard-setting body in tourism.
