The Difference Between Regenerative Tourism and Sustainable Tourism
Regenerative tourism has emerged as a buzzword in the travel industry, often touted as a new paradigm that transcends sustainable tourism. However, the term is fraught with ambiguity and lacks a coherent operational framework. This post aims to clarify the meaning of regenerative tourism, highlight its distinctions from sustainable tourism, and critique its practical relevance.
Understanding Regenerative Tourism
Definition and Origins: Regenerative tourism is often described as a practice that seeks to leave destinations in a better state than they were found. It draws inspiration from regenerative agriculture, which emphasizes restoring ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity. The term gained traction around 2019, but its substantive application remains elusive.
Key Misconceptions: Proponents claim that regenerative tourism goes beyond merely minimizing harm, asserting that it actively improves local ecosystems and communities. However, this assertion is misleading. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has long emphasized that sustainable tourism also focuses on increasing positive impacts alongside reducing negative ones, as outlined in the GSTC Criteria.
Implementation of Regenerative Tourism
Many discussions surrounding regenerative tourism seem to stem from a desire for more inspirational terminology rather than substantive change. This has led to a proliferation of articles and academic papers that offer little more than rehashed ideas without clear operational guidelines.
However, many that use the term Regenerative Tourism fail to deliver concrete applications for businesses seeking to adopt regenerative practices. If there are applicable and actionable guidelines, they can easily be referred to as part of ‘sustainable tourism’ terminology.
Moreover, the narrative that regenerative tourism is a superior alternative to sustainable tourism overlooks the comprehensive nature of the well defined sustainable tourism. The GSTC Criteria explicitly encourage both reducing negative impacts and enhancing positive ones, thereby addressing many of the claims made by advocates of regenerative tourism.
Implementation of Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable tourism encompasses practices that promote sustainability within the tourism sector, aiming for all forms of tourism to operate sustainably. It is defined as “tourism that fully considers its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts, while addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities.” According to UNEP & UNWTO (Making Tourism More Sustainable – A Guide for Policy Makers; 2005: 11-12), sustainability principles involve balancing environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of tourism development to ensure long-term viability.
The GSTC Criteria serve global standards for sustainability in travel and tourism, providing a coherent framework for implementation.
These criteria are utilized for education, policy-making for businesses and government entities, measurement and evaluation, and as a foundation for certification. They represent a collective effort to create a common understanding of sustainability in tourism, organized into four key pillars: (1) Sustainable Management; (2) Socioeconomic Impacts; (3) Cultural Impacts; (4) Environmental Impacts (including resource consumption, pollution reduction, and biodiversity conservation).
Developed through extensive global consultation over decades, the GSTC Criteria acts as the main reference standard for sustainability in tourism. The development process adhered to the ISEAL Alliance’s standard-setting code, ensuring alignment with relevant ISO standards.
Given that each tourism destination has its unique culture, environment, customs, and laws, the Criteria are designed to be adaptable to local conditions and can be supplemented with additional criteria specific to each location or activity.
——————
Sustainable tourism is “Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.” “Sustainability principles refer to the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of tourism development, and a suitable balance must be established between these three dimensions to guarantee its long-term sustainability”

I loved every piece of the training, very insightful, well done by the presenters and the trainers! It gives us much more credibility to talk about sustainable tourism.
The GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training gave me the tools and network to be able to work for a more sustainable tourism sector in the area where I’m based (South Sweden). The structure with the four principles makes it easy to follow and to discuss also outside the GSTC world. The examples from the other participants were great, and we will continue sharing good and bad examples from destinations all over the world.
The GSTC training is very useful for everyone in our efforts of future sustainability. The GSTC criteria guide us towards the best practices and enable us to monitor the progress of each important task.
I would strongly recommend GSTC training to all types because it sets a baseline for future sustainability efforts.
I’ve always tried to improve and learn about modern methods of preservation, to practice sustainable tourism, and to better apply my knowledge with my team.
With my participation in this course, I was able to understand the GSTC criteria and how best to apply them in my daily life in a didactic way.
The GSTC training provided me with a deep understanding of the criteria. My fellow classmates were industry experts in various sectors from around the world, bringing the criteria to life with valuable examples/discussions of how they have implemented the very practices we were learning.
I had an insightful experience with the course that significantly enhanced my awareness of key areas for improvement. The structure of the feedback process was excellent, making it easy to articulate concerns and suggestions. Additionally, the clear communication throughout demonstrated a thoughtful and organized approach. Overall, the course was not only informative but also highly engaging, providing a valuable platform for personal and professional growth. I highly recommend it!

Participating in the GSTC course was a great way for me to connect with the current trends in the sustainable tourism sector. In addition to spending time reviewing all of the criteria of the GSTC Industry Criteria, we were also given myriad resources to further research, and people to network with. While I have worked in the field for many years, it was a wonderful new perspective offered by people who are deeply embedded within the sector and very knowledgeable about the scope of the industry today. I would highly recommend this course to people who are just learning about sustainable tourism, but also to people who are looking to gain further knowledge and/or connections.
An excellent course, very well designed and structured, challenging with great support from the trainers. The practical insights I gained will help me in my future project to embed sustainability in educational projects.
The overview of standards, coupled with best practice and real world examples has been very beneficial for my work in destination management and responsible tourism development. The ability to meet likeminded industry colleagues, who are working in this arena was also highly valuable.
It was a great learning experience, very practical and applicable in real life. The trainers are always available, caring and attentive. The participants are of a high level, and the notion of “learning by sharing” is taken seriously.

The training gave me a clear understanding of the challenges we face and the actions to take to make sustainability effective, [covering] each of the main areas in a systematic way with enough technical detail for those who needed it, without losing the less technical trainees (like myself) who needed to understand the broad overview of sustainable tourism practices
Taking the GSTC training at this point in time was extremely valuable. It gave me a sustainable tourism framework to help assess what I’ve been able to accomplish and also consider the role that sustainable experiential travel may mean as we begin to inch our way out of the world of zero tourism towards something likely new and different. One other great benefit of the training was starting to get acquainted and sharing with other participants and instructors from around the globe. These connections will be valuable for a very long time to come.
I’ve participated in the course to get a comprehensive overview of destination sustainability criteria.
