Located in the Andean highlands and renowned for its historical significance as the former capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco served as the backdrop for the 10th Peruvian Tourism Congress CONPETUR 2024 held on the 24th and 25th of October 2024.
Luigi Cabrini, Chair of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), was the keynote speaker at the event, where he delivered a presentation titled « Global Standards for Sustainable Travel and Tourism. »
Mr. Cabrini focused on the importance of adopting global standards for sustainable tourism, emphasizing the role of the GSTC Criteria in helping businesses and destinations minimize environmental impact, preserve cultural heritage, and foster local community well-being.
The event included a variety of interactive workshops and panel discussions designed to provide attendees with hands-on learning opportunities. These sessions covered a wide range of themes, from sustainable management of tourism resources to the role of technology in enhancing tourist experiences.
Mr. Cabrini participated in the panel “Analysis, Implications, and Challenges of Public Policies in the Sustainable Development of Tourism in Peru” along with:
- Gov. Paul Palma Herrera – Mayor of the District Municipality of Charcana
- Dr. Isela Mocoso Paricoto – General Manager of Amazing Andean Corporation S.A.C.
- Mag. Jorge Pachecho – Professor at the Professional School of Tourism at the National University of San Antonio Abad in Cusco (UNSAAC)
- Dr. Niger Poblete Farfán – Professor at the Professional School of Tourism at the National University of San Antonio Abad in Cusco (UNSAAC), whom moderated the session.
“Peru’s natural and cultural heritage is extraordinary, and the commitment of all sectors—public, private, and academic—is essential to ensure that tourism here contributes positively to local communities and ecosystems,” highlighted Mr. Cabrini.
As CONPETUR celebrated its 10th anniversary, it remains an event for fostering dialogue and collaboration between different sectors—private, public, and academic—on creating a more sustainable and inclusive tourism model for Peru.
