GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training sponsored by JTB concluded successfully

The GSTC Sustainable Tourism Course sponsored by JTB for their employees and stakeholders held from the 27th to the 29th of August at JTB Headquarters in Tokyo, concluded successfully. A total of 28 participants successfully attended the training in Tokyo, Japan. The course was led by GSTC Trainer Mami Futagami, Dr. Professor Emeritus at Meijo University.

“It was an invaluable opportunity to engage with the dedicated professionals of JTB, the leading travel agency in Japan. They were keen on learning the global sustainability criteria and its tourism application. I hope what they learned in the training will help them better equipped with essential knowledge and skills in creating sustainable products,” said GSTC Trainer Dr. Mami Futagami.

The class also visited Hotel New Otani Tokyo to learn more about its environmental policy and practices, including the hotel recycling system of food waste generated by the kitchens and its utilizing “grey water,” approximately 1,000 tons of kitchen wastewater biologically treated daily to be reused for watering trees and gardens, flushing toilets, etc.  Additionally, they toured the Sumida Aquarium, renowned for its animal welfare policy and practices. They learned how the aquarium keepers manage the penguins’ nutrition and health daily and conduct research to ensure their healthy and fulfilling lives.

The GSTC Sustainable Tourism Course equipped participants with indispensable knowledge and skills essential for advocating sustainable tourism practices. It served as an immersive experience, allowing attendees to explore the GSTC Criteria, which are recognized globally as the standards for sustainability in tourism and travel.

Upon successful course completion, participants receive a certificate of completion and become eligible to take an optional official exam to obtain the GSTC Professional Certificate in Sustainable Tourism.
