The GSTC Sustainable Tourism Course, sponsored by Himeji City for its employees concluded successfully. It was held in Himeji City, Japan, from the 3rd to the 5th of February 2025. A total of 16 participants attended the training, and GSTC Trainer Kazuhiro Arai, Representative of Daisetsuzan Nature School, led the course.
The training covered the GSTC Criteria, the global standards for sustainability in travel and tourism and provided participants with insights into best practices for responsible and sustainable management. Through presentations, real-world case studies, and interactive discussions, participants examined practical ways to integrate sustainability practices into their daily work.
As part of the training, participants took part in a field visit to Himeji Castle, where they gained firsthand insights into heritage conservation and sustainable tourism management. The visit provided a unique opportunity to observe how sustainability principles are applied in the preservation of cultural landmarks while balancing visitor experience and environmental responsibility.

“Himeji Castle is the largest of Japan’s five national treasure castles. Since its construction, it has never suffered significant war damage, and nearly 100 structures, including the main keep, smaller keeps, and turrets, still remain intact. The Himeji Convention Center, a DMO, along with the local businesses participated to protect the national treasure, while also promoting regional tourism and economic revitalization. This served as an opportunity to consider how to enhance educational and economic value using the GSTC Criteria.” said Mr. Arai.
Upon successful course completion, participants receive a certificate of completion and become eligible to take an optional official exam to obtain the GSTC Professional Certificate in Sustainable Tourism.
