Academyc Symposium Call for Papers

The 3rd GSTC Academic Symposium will be held in Fiji on August 5th just before the GSTC2025 Global Conference. This one-day, in-person gathering offers a dedicated space for researchers, practitioners and academics to connect and explore key topics in sustainable tourism.

The symposium aims to foster dialogue and knowledge-sharing by inviting submissions focused on sustainability in tourism. We welcome your contributions and look forward to your participation in this third edition of the GSTC Academic Symposium, where meaningful exchange and collaboration take center stage.

Call for Papers – Abstract Submissions Now Open

Abstract submissions are open for this third GSTC Academic Symposium, organized alongside the GSTC2025 Global Sustainable Tourism Conference. The symposium serves as a forum for academics and practitioners on sustainable tourism to present and discuss their work. Contributions to all aspects of sustainable tourism are welcome, with particular encouragement for papers that incorporate the GSTC Framework or demonstrate how the GSTC Criteria are embedded in academic programs.

We welcome original research, case studies, and theoretical contributions related (but not limited) to the following themes:

  • Coastal and Island Tourism
  • Community, Culture, and Responsible Development
  • Climate Resilience, Adaption, and Sustainable Recovery

While authors are encouraged to submit abstracts addressing these themes, any submissions related to current issues in sustainable tourism research will be considered. Researchers and professionals may submit abstracts for in-person presentations during the conference academic symposium since they will be invited* to present onsite.

“Our experience has been that at this symposium, academics, it is an opportunity for industry leaders, and policymakers to engage in meaningful dialogue, exchanging knowledge that informs decision-making and strengthens the integration of sustainability principles across tourism sectors. The discussions have underscored the importance of adaptive management, climate resilience, and community engagement in ensuring that tourism remains a force for good. By fostering an ongoing exchange between research and practice, the GSTC Academic Symposium reinforces the commitment to advancing sustainable tourism development worldwide, ensuring that destinations not only thrive economically but also preserve their cultural heritage and natural environments for future generations.” says Dr. Kelly Bricker, Associate Dean and Director of Hainan University-Arizona State University International College, and GSTC Vice Chair.
