European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who was elected for a second mandate, presented to the European Parliament her Political Guidelines for the next European Commission 2024-2029. 

She appointed Apostolos Tzitzikostas as the new EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism. The announcement was made on September 17, 2024, marking a milestone for Greek representation in European affairs. It’s the first time the European Commission has created a dedicated portfolio that combines transport and tourism, highlighting the crucial role these sectors play in Europe’s green transition!

Tzitzikostas, previously the governor of the Region of Central Macedonia, will lead initiatives to promote sustainable mobility solutions and tourism practices across Europe. His responsibilities align with the European Green Deal’s goals to decarbonize transport and promote eco-friendly tourism strategies. 

Industry leaders, including the European Travel Commission and ACI Europe, have expressed their support for this appointment, emphasizing the importance of robust strategies to ensure the resilience of Europe’s tourism sector while reducing its environmental impact.
