The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) held a workshop for its Japan members in Tokyo on February 6th, 2025. The event, organized in collaboration with Rakuten Travel, took place at the Rakuten Crimson House Headquarters.
The workshop provided a platform for GSTC Japan Members to engage in interactive sessions, discussions, and presentations focusing on the latest global trends and best practices in sustainable tourism.
This workshop marked the third of its kind in Japan for GSTC Members and was highlighted by the presence of several key figures from the GSTC as GSTC General Manager Roi Ariel, GSTC Asia Pacific Manager Emi Kaiwa, GSTC Market Development Manager Rita Kuan, Asia Market Development Manager Soohyun Kwon and Naomi Oiwa, Japan Market Development Manager.
The first workshop was held in September 2023, followed by a second edition in May 2024. Building on the success and positive impact of these previous sessions, this latest workshop was organized to further strengthen collaboration, share best practices, and deepen the discussion on sustainable tourism. The growing interest and engagement from participants have highlighted the need for continued dialogue and connection, making this new edition a valuable opportunity to drive meaningful progress in the industry.
With more than 83 attendees, the workshop opened with remarks by Kuniko Takasaki, Managing Executive Officer, Chief DEIB Officer, of JTB Group. Participants were able to gain a deeper knowledge of the meanings of Certification, Accreditation, Recognition, and the GSTC Criteria as well as the latest global trends and best practices in sustainable tourism.
During the workshop, members had time to exchange ideas about sharing initiatives from each company, and challenges in promoting sustainable tourism. Additionally, attendees addressed innovative approaches and shared best practices for future projects, fostering a productive environment that concluded in arranging the next GSTC Japan Meeting in September 2025.
The GSTC workshop in Tokyo proved to be highly impactful, further strengthening the dedication of GSTC Members in Japan to promoting sustainable tourism. The event showcased ongoing initiatives and accomplishments in the field, motivating participants to persist in their efforts toward a more sustainable future for the tourism industry.
